Our Philosophy

We believe yoga is not a performance; it is a practice. A practice of returning to yourself, again and again, with patience and grace.

At Widespread Movement, we honor the whole person who walks through our door. Whether you are navigating grief, chasing growth, healing an old injury, or simply craving stillness in a noisy world, there is a place for you on the mat. We do not ask you to contort yourself into a pose; rather, we invite you to move in the way that feels true to your body, your breath, and your season of life.

Inclusivity is not a tagline here. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

How Widespread Movement Began

Honestly? I came to yoga 20 years ago because I was struggling.

I was not searching for a fitness routine or a trendy wellness habit. I was searching for a way to feel at home in my own body. To quiet the noise in my mind, to connect with pieces of myself that I did not fully know about. Movement became my medicine. The mat became a place where I could be honest with myself in a way I could not anywhere else, and I finally found a peace within myself that I had not ever known.

The more I practiced, the more I noticed something: some of the studios I visited didn't always feel built for everyone. They were beautiful, yes, but sometimes intimidating. Sometimes exclusive in ways that were quiet but unmistakable. And I kept thinking: what if there was a place that felt like coming home from the very first breath for everyone who attended?

In 2026, with a big nudge from my husband, I stopped waiting for that place to exist and started building it. Widespread Movement was born from that longing for belonging, for healing, for a community that genuinely celebrates everybody who shows up. We opened our doors in Chesapeake, VA with one simple promise: no one would ever feel like they did not belong here.

That promise guides everything we do.

Radical Inclusivity

Every shape, size, age, background, and ability level is celebrated here. We actively work to make our space one where no one has to shrink themselves to fit in.

Accessible Movement

Yoga is not one-size-fits-all, and it was not ever meant to be. Our teachers offer modifications, props, and encouragement, so your practice meets you exactly where you are.

Mind & Body Wellness

We hold space for the whole human experience the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual. Healing happens when all three are honored together.

Our Community

The most beautiful thing we have built here is not the studio itself; it is the people who make the community in it.

Our community is made up of beginners who showed up nervous and left feeling seen. Seasoned practitioners who found a new home for their practice. Of people who came for the yoga and stayed for the connection, the conversations after class, the familiar faces on the mat beside them, the quiet knowing that they are not alone in whatever they are carrying.

We are neighbors, parents, healers, dreamers, and seekers. We are people who have been hard on ourselves and are learning, slowly, to be softer. We are Chesapeake and we are growing, one breath at a time.

Whether you have never set foot on a mat or you have been practicing for decades, you will find your people here. We promise.

Where We Are Growing

While we are still in our early chapters, we're so excited. Opening in 2026 means we are building this together, in real time, with the very community we serve. Every class, every conversation, every new face that walks through our door shapes what Widespread Movement is becoming.

Our vision is a studio that grows alongside members, expanding offerings, deepening roots, and continuing to lower every barrier that keeps people from experiencing the transformation that movement can bring. We dream of community events, partnerships, workshops, and retreats that ripple wellness outward into our city.

We are just getting started. And would love for you to be part of the story.

For Beginners & Beyond

Absolutely — and we mean that with our whole hearts. Our beginner-friendly classes are designed to introduce you to yoga gently, without pressure or judgment. You do not need flexibility, strength, or experience. You only need to show up. We will take care of the rest.
This is one of the most common fears we hear — and one we love to gently dismantle. Every pose in our classes comes with modifications and alternatives. Our teachers are trained to help you find what works for your unique body, not push you into a shape that does not. Yoga is a practice, not a performance.
Yes. We offer classes across a range of levels, and our experienced practitioners often find that returning to fundamentals with fresh eyes is one of the most powerful things they can do. There is always more depth available — in the breath, in the alignment, in the stillness.

We are intentional about it every single day. From the way our teachers speak to the way our space is designed — warm, cozy, and human — we work to make sure that the moment you walk in, you feel welcomed. Because you are.

We invite you to join us for a free intro class — no commitment, no pressure, just an opportunity to experience the Widespread Movement difference for yourself. Check our schedule and find a class that fits your week. We cannot wait to meet you.
