Ever had your one yoga loving friend invite you "come try it out", but don't because what is down dog?

Maybe you've been curious about yoga for a while but keep talking yourself out of it. Maybe you tried a class once and felt lost. Maybe you're worried everyone else will be a human pretzel while you're still figuring out which way is up.

That's exactly why this page exists! Real answers to the real questions beginners ask no fluff, no judgment.

The Big Worries (Let's Put Them to Rest)

Absolutely not!

Just like we don't need to be fit to go to the gym; we don't need to be flexible to start yoga. Here at Widespread Movement we want you to come exactly as you are! Every pose has modifications for all levels, and your teacher will show you options that work for your body today.

Yoga has ancient roots, but our classes are not religious services. You won't be asked to adopt any beliefs, chant prayers, or change your worldview. Many people practice yoga purely for the physical and mental benefits; better posture, less stress, stronger core.

If you'd like to explore the philosophical side, that's always available, but it's not ever required.

Come as you are, believe what you believe.

Here's the truth: everyone in that room was a beginner once, including the teacher.

Our classes are planned to be beginner-friendly! Yoga is a personal practice, not a performance. Your classmates are focused on their own breath and their own bodies, not watching you. We promise: no one is judging you! We're all just here to move and breathe and feel a little bit better.

Then you don't do it.

And that's completely fine! Every pose has simpler variations and modifications. Your teacher will offer options throughout class, and you're always encouraged to rest in Child's Pose or lay it down in Shavasana (Corpse Pose) whenever you need a break or a nap! There is no failing in yoga. The only goal is to show up and listen to your body.

The Practical Stuff

Comfortable clothes you can move in, that's it.

The infamous yoga leggings or stretchy pants and a fitted top work great. You don't need special yoga gear. Avoid very baggy clothes (they can fall over your face in certain poses) and jeans.

Yoga is done barefoot, so no special shoes needed either.

We have loaner mats and props available for you to use.

If you end up loving yoga and want your own mat down the road, that's great! We can help you out with that but for your first class, just show up.

We've got everything you need.

It's best to come on an empty-ish stomach. Try to avoid a heavy meal for at least 2 hours before class. A light snack an hour before is perfect if you need it. Yoga involves a lot of twisting, bending, and moving, a full belly can make that uncomfortable.

We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early for your first class. This gives you time to introduce yourself to the teacher, let them know you're new, grab a mat and any props, and settle in before we begin. Your teacher can give you a quick orientation so you feel prepared and not thrown in at the deep end.

Please let your teacher know before class, even just a quick heads-up. Our teachers are trained to offer modifications and alternatives so you can participate safely. Yoga can actually be a wonderful tool for recovery and managing chronic conditions. You know your body best; your teacher is there to support you, not push you past your limits or your medical professionals recommendations.

What to Expect in Class

A typical class starts with a few minutes of settling in. This is usually lying down, sitting, or standing quietly to arrive and breathe. Then we move through a series of poses (called asanas) that build strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Your teacher will guide you through every movement with clear verbal cues. Class usually ends with a few minutes of deep relaxation called Savasana (or Corpse Pose) just lying still and letting your body absorb the practice. It's often people's favorite part, and can result in a mini nap.

Our classes use plain, clear language. When we do use a Sanskrit pose name, we always explain what it means and what it looks like. You'll not ever be expected to know anything in advance.

Think of it like following along with a friendly yoga tour guide.

Most of our classes run 60 minutes, some could be longer or shorter. Check the schedule for specific class lengths. For your very first class, a 60-minute session is a great starting point, long enough to feel the benefits, short enough not to feel overwhelming.

Life happens and we understand. If you need to leave before class ends, just set up near the exit and let your teacher know beforehand. We only ask that you try to slip out before the final relaxation, as that's a quiet, restorative moment for everyone.

Most people feel noticeably more at ease after just 3–4 classes.

The first class is always the most unfamiliar after that, you'll recognize the rhythm, know where things are, and start to feel like you belong.

Give yourself a little grace and keep showing up for yourself. The magic is in the consistency.
